Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Maclay, St. Johns Country Day lead All-Sports Award standings

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Maclay and St. Johns Country Day high schools hold early leads in their respective classifications in the 1997-98 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Award standings.

Winter Park leads Class 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, Class 5A; Bishop Kenny of Jacksonville, Class 4A; Bolles of Jacksonville, Class 3A; Maclay of Tallahassee, Class 2A and St. Johns Country Day of Orange Park, Class A; following the conclusion of the fall sports season.

The standings, which are compiled and updated following the conclusion each sports season, rank member senior high schools based on their finish against schools in their classification in FHSAA Championship competition. Twenty points are awarded for a first-place finish, 18 for second place, 16 for third, 14 for fourth, 12 for fifth, 11 for sixth, 10 for seventh, 9 for eighth, 8 for ninth, 7 for 10th, 6 for 11th, 5 for 12th, 4 for 13th, 3 for 14th, 2 for 15th and 1 for 16th.

Points are divided evenly between schools who share finishes in championship competition. For example, in team sports, the FHSAA does not award a third place, fourth place, etc. In these cases, the points for third place and fourth place – a total of 30 – are shared evenly (15 points each) by the two schools which lose in the semifinal round. The four schools which lose in the regional finals share the points for fifth through eighth place (10.5 points each) and the eight schools which lost in the regional semifinals share the points for ninth through 16th place (4.5 points each).

Standings are kept separately for girls programs, boys programs and overall athletic program.

The awards program is named for Floyd E. Lay, who was Executive Secretary (now known as Commissioner) of the Association from 1963-80.

The standings for all classifications are as follows:
