Conference Call
I. Introductions and Purpose
Mrs. Rohrer called the meeting to order at 10:07 a.m., welcomed attendees to the Conference Call and introduced all participants. Mrs. Rohrer also reviewed the purpose of the Weightlifting Coaches Advisory Committee and their role within the sport. Participating in the Conference Call were committee members, Gordon Roberts, Palatka High School as well as FACA Representative and Jesse Reynolds, Episcopal High School. Additionally, Mike DeGennaro, River Ridge High School and Girls State Final Host participated along with Jamie Rohrer, FHSAA Weightlifting Administrator. Only two voting members of the committee participated, therefore, there were not enough members to make a quorum and no items could be acted on.
II. Review Procedures, Agenda and Expense Vouchers
Mrs. Rohrer noted that Roberts Rules of Order were not in affect since there were not enough voting members participating and no items would be acted on. The agenda was then reviewed and expense vouchers were a non-issue since the meeting had been changed to a Conference Call.
III. Selection of Chairperson
Mrs. Rohrer was chosen to lead the meeting by all participants.
IV. Review and Adoption of 2007 Committee Minutes
The participants reviewed the minutes from the 2007 Advisory Committee Meeting and there were no questions or concerns brought forth.
V. Review of Existing Weightlifting Manual
Both Boys and Girls Weightlifting Manuals were reviewed. The only editorial change that came about is as follows:
105.10 (2) (l) – Failing to finish with the feet and the barbell within the boundaries of the platform at initial contact (e.g. the complete barbell has to touch the platform first) will render the attempt “no lift.”
This will help to clarify the intended rule interpretation for all judges and help the rule to be enforced more consistently. It was also noted that this should be added into the Online Rules Presentation for the 2008-2009 season.
VI. Review 2008 Weightlifting State Championships
Mrs. Rohrer noted that the Boys and Girls Weightlifting State Finals were both a success last year and that the FHSAA appreciated the generous efforts of River Ridge High School and Spruce Creek High School. The Rules Presentation and example video that was provided by Jesse Reynolds, which was used in the Coaches and Judges Meetings were greatly appreciated too. The video was a great addition to the State Championships.
VII. Old Business
The creation of a Weightlifting Officials Association
Recommendation: To establish a weightlifting officials association to train State Finals Judges
Rationale: Allows for proper training of officials throughout the state to bring consistency to the judging of the sport of weightlifting.
1st WTAC Reading 5-0 passed. (8/27/07) Motion Reynolds, second by Smithers
2nd WTAC Reading (Discussion Only – 9/3/08) No quorum
During the discussion, it was noted that it would be a good idea to put together a Judges Video to aid judges and member schools on how to interpret the rules consistently across the state. It was also discussed that the FHSAA and possibly a few experienced judges host sectional meetings to help create consistent judging. Mrs. Rohrer will work with Mr. Reynolds on this endeavor.
Remove rule 204.3 (2) J. To allow the awarding of Sectional Team Champions
Recommendation: Sectional Meets. Trophies are available for awarding to the champion and runner-up teams, and may be purchased from the FHSAA’s authorized vendor by the host school or section as an expense of the meet as determined by those school representatives present at the section meeting, or individually by the champion and runner-up schools. There shall be no other team awards presented by outside organizations or individuals.
Rationale: Since weightlifting is an individual sport that has a team aspect, by awarding a team champion, it would push athletes to succeed and offer weightlifting athletes the same team awards as is done in other individual FHSAA sports.
1st WTAC Reading 5-0 passed. (8/27/07) Motion Reynolds, second by Smithers
2nd WTAC Reading (Discussion Only – 9/3/08) No quorum
During the discussion, it was noted that in all other sports, there are District and Region awards available for purchase. Therefore, Weightlifting Coaches would like the same opportunity for their participants. The possibility of earning these types of awards may also increase awareness of the sport and sport participation by student-athletes.
VIII. New Business
Choose Spring Date for future Weightlifting Advisory Committee Meetings
Traditionally, it’s been difficult for Weightlifting Advisory Committee Members to attend Fall Committee Meetings due to their involvement with Football as well as the time of year and being away from school. For this reason, it seems necessary to change the meeting to a date in the spring, after the Boys Weightlifting State Championship is over. The participating callers discussed this option and thought it would be best to possibly hold the meeting at the Boys Weightlifting State Final Meet upon it’s completion. Mrs. Rohrer noted that she would look into this possibility and contact the additional committee member to get their sentiments.
Entry Lists Change Form (WT5) – Deadline
Recommendation: All additions/changes to Entry List must be made to the host school prior to the day of the qualifying meet.
Rationale: This will solve issues that will occur the day of the meet.
The participating callers discussed this and felt that what was in place was working well for the time being. If problems seem to occur more often, this is something that may need to be revisited. However, the current process seems to be running fairly smooth at this time.
1st WTAC Reading (Discussion Only – 9/3/08) No quorum
IX. FACA Recommendations
No FACA Recommendations were presented and no serious concerns were addressed.
X. Round Table Discussion
All round table discussion items were discussed during the regular meeting. No other questions or concerns were brought up.
XI. Adjournment
With no further business, Mrs. Rohrer adjourned the Conference Call at 11:44 a.m.
