1. Welcome, Introductions, Purpose
Dr. Reilly called the meeting to order at 7:11 PM. Members present were: Dr. Dennis Cardone, Ft. Myers; Dr. Jeff Matilsky, Gainesville; and Dr. Michael Reilly. FHSAA representatives present were: Denarvise Thornton, Shanell Young, Travis Kwok (Intern), and David Sweeney (Intern).

2. Review agenda and complete expense vouchers

3. Approval of Aug. 28, 2007 SMAC Meeting Minutes
The committee approved the minutes of the previous meeting, Aug. 28, 2007.

4. Review Minutes of NFHS SMAC Meeting, Oct. 6-8, 2007
The committee will review NFHS minutes at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

5. Open Agenda (discussion only):
a). Steroids Update
Mr. Thornton provided an update on the steroid testing program.
b). MRSA • Denarvise Thornton
The committee discussed the effect that MRSA has had on interscholastic athletics, citing two cases in South Florida and how the member schools responded to those situations. The county health department was involved in the process for declaring the facility(ies) were safe to resume athletic activity.
c). Cape Coast Conference
The committee reviewed a communication submitted from Mr. Gary Shiffrin, Commissioner of Cape Coast Conference. The attached document addressed the requirement of EKG’s for student-athletes as a requirement in the pre-participation evaluation process. Dr. Cardone volunteered to communicate directly with Mr. Shiffrin regarding this matter as it has been an issue and is still an ongoing topic of discussion by NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee.
d). HIV Participation Policies
Mr. Thornton shared the results of a survey conducted by NFHS regarding Participation Policies for HIV-Positive Student-Athletes.
e). Review Athletic Trainer E-Mail Regarding Football Knee Braces
The committee reviewed the an email submitted by Joel Kennedy regarding requirements or standards for allowing knee braces by high school athletes. Staff was directed to share the NFHS rules regarding braces to Mr. Kennedy.
