Minutes
December 4, 2002 • 10 a.m.
FHSAA Headquarters
Gainesville, Florida

1. Purpose and Introductions
The meeting was called to order at 10 a.m. by Ronald Allen and conducted by Denarvise Thornton. Mr. Thornton noted the purpose of the meeting and those in attendance proceeded with a brief introduction of themselves. In attendance were members: Mike Boza, Jesuit High; Vic Cervizzi, Booksville-Central High; Robert Crabtree, Ransom Everglades High; Allan Gibson, Marianna High; Jason Means, Riverview High; Brad Penney, Cedar Key High; and Rick Rothman, Spanish River (FACA). FHSAA staff members present were: Ronald L. Allen, Associate Commissioner, and M. Denarvise Thornton, Associate Director of Athletics.

The committee selected Rick Rothman as the chairperson.

2. The Committee completed their travel expense vouchers. The agenda was adopted as presented

3. The committee approved the minutes from the November 28, 2001 meeting.

4. Review of 2002-03 Cross Country Manual – Noting that some of the upcoming recommendations were regarding policies listed in the manual, the committee noted some “editorial” comments for staff to consider in the manual. 6.002 should read “race” and not “meet” to remain consistent with the interpretation of the policy.19.050 should be written with more clarity, although the inconsistency in interpretation is specific to one geographic region.

5. Review of 2002-03 State Series Events – The committee commended the Leto High School, Hillsborough County School Board and Mr. Bobby Ennis for their efforts in making the state finals a first class event. Changing the time for the coaches’ meeting was discussed, but no action was taken.

6. Review of State Championship Meet – The committee noted the atmosphere of the state finals being one the best it has ever experienced. A comment regarding the “tightness” of one turn was noted, but without great impact. The use of the “chip timing system” made the difference in an outstanding meet. Mr. Allen noted the short length of time in which the results were ready and posted, due to this timing system.
