NFHS approves rules modification request for softball pitching distance
Pitching distance for the 2009 season will be 43 feet
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has approved the FHSAA's request for a fourth NFHS experiment relative to the 43-foot pitching distance for the 2009 season – the same one used during the 2008 season. The request had been endorsed by the FHSAA Board of Directors, as well as the softball and athletic directors advisory committees.

FHSAA Softball Manual:  1-1-2(b) Pitching Distance (NFHS Approved Experiment). The pitching distance shall be 43 feet for varsity and junior varsity teams for the 2008-09 fast-pitch softball season. (Middle school and junior high school teams may elect to use the 43 feet pitching distance or remain at the 40 feet distance, as long as the distance is stipulated in the game contract.)
