FHSAA seeks attorneys, minority representatives for sectional appeals committees

The FHSAA is looking for attorneys as well as school administrators who are female and/or representative of a racial minority who have an interest in volunteering to serve on one of the Association's four sectional appeals committees. The FHSAA Board of Directors must appoint one attorney and one at-large school representative from the under-represented gender or a racial minority to each of the four newly expanded committees. These appointments will be made at the board's June 12-13 meeting in Jacksonville Beach. Here are the requirements:

• Attorney Member – Must reside within the section served by the committee; must have within the last five years been a member in good standing of the Florida Bar or the bar of any other state in the union; and cannot be connected with any member school, public school district or private school accrediting organization, or represent student-athletes, coaches or athletic directors in any manner. The attorney member will chair the committee.

• At-Large Member – Must be a public school administrator on a district level or school level in Sections 1, 2 and 3; must be a private school administrator on a district, regional or school level in section 4; must be either a female or representative of a racial minority. A school-based adminstrator does not have to be his/her school's officially designated FHSAA representative.

Each sectional appeals committee meets nine times a year (monthly August through April) to consider requests by schools seeking exceptions to FHSAA rules; to hear undue hardship eligibility cases that are filed by schools on behalf of student-athletes; and to hear appeals of decisions of the FHSAA office (other than findings of major infractions) that are filed by schools. Here are the meeting sites and 2008-09 meeting dates for each committee:
