Hall of Fame member Clarence Noe passes away at 80
Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame member Clarence "Doc" Noe died Tuesday at the age of 80.
As director of athletics for the Broward County School System and, as such, the commissioner of the Broward County Athletic Association, Noe was responsible for overseeing the diverse athletic programs of more than 20 of the fastest growing senior high schools in Florida.
Noe was born in 1929 in Nabb, Ind. He graduated from New Washington High School in 1947, and served two years in the U.S. Air Force. After lettering in baseball for two years at the University of Louisville, Noe attended and graduated from Indiana University.
He began his teaching and coaching career at Lexington High School in Indiana in 1954. In 1957, he made the move to Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale, where he remained as teacher, coach and dean until 1967. Noe then moved to the county office to supervise the countys driver education, health and physical education programs until his appointment to the position of director of athletics in 1972, a position he held until 1996.
A former track coach, Noe served as meet referee for the FHSAA Track & Field Finals for 30 years, and is a member of the Florida Track & Field Hall of Fame. In 2006, he was awarded the Jimmy Carnes Lifetime Achievement Award for Track.
Noe was a founding member and the first Past President of the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 1979, and the fourth president of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 1983.
Since his retirement in 1996, he worked part-time with the Southern Association of Secondary Schools as the chair for visiting teams in evaluating schools. He also served as an adjunct instructor for Nova Southeastern University, teaching the required courses in driver education, physical education, coaching and administration.
Noe is survived by his wife, Beverly; four children; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 5, at 2 p.m. at John Knox Village in Pompano Beach.
