Proposal to Amend Classification Policy to Include 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Numbers for Classification Purposes
A member school’s athletic director and FHSAA Representative has submitted a proposal to revise the FHSAA Classification Policy (Policy 12.2.1) for all sports. The proposal calls for classifications to be based on a school’s student population for all grade levels offered at the school (sixth through 12th).
The submitted proposal recommends that FHSAA Policy 12.2.1 should read: “An existing full member senior high school shall be classified for the 2011-12 through 2012-13 school years on the basis of a school’s student population in the sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades combined as reported to the FHSAA during the week in October 2010 designated by the Florida Department of Education for the fall semester FTE survey of public schools.”
The current FHSAA Classification Policy 12.2.1 reads: “An existing full member senior high school shall be classified on the basis of the school’s student population in the ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th grades combined as reported during the week in October designated by the Florida Department of Education for the fall semester FTE survey of public schools.”
The proposal seeks to remove any “advantage” of combination schools “over most of the other schools within their classification that only have access to their athletes for up to four years.”
The FHSAA is seeking input from member schools, athletic directors, coaches and the public concerning endorsement or non-endorsement of the recommendation. Contact FIAAA, FACA or the FHSAA Public Liaison Advisory Committee at publicinput@fhsaa.org.
Attention Athletic Directors: In the near future, a survey will be released to all schools about this subject.
